The Pursuit of Truth
Jul 14, 2015
Do you stand for truth? Do you like the idea of truth? Most of us do. We have all heard the phrase “The truth will set you free.” It’s actually from the Bible in the book of John. But, the truth is it seems that people have gotten too lazy to actually pursue truth. And so, false claims or wrong thinking is touted as “truth” and is being accepted as such. There was once such a thing as intellectual curiosity, rigorous scholarship, responsible journalism. Have we as a society become so worn out, over-stimulated, over-fed, over-saturated, spun out by the best media spin-meisters, that we have become mindless zombies willing to go along with whatever bullhorn is the loudest? Are we as individuals and as a society taking the time to actually question, investigate and challenge what is said or shouted from every corner of the social media landscape? Or, are we the walking dead?
There are also those who have great conviction in their beliefs, but either don’t have the facts to back up their stances, or hold to their convictions with an emotionalism that transcends reason. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Scroll through your social media homepage some time. Where is the healthy, respectful, rigorous debate…the give and take of speaking and listening, which requires humility from its participants? Where is the bridge of understanding, the accountability and true tolerance that would be a natural result of a society’s pursuit of truth? Here’s a thought, if the “truth” that we accept is actually a lie that is perpetuated, then wouldn’t that make us all slaves and enslavers?
It is time for us to reexamine ourselves as individuals and as a society. We must wake up, get out from our liberal, conservative, and “I don’t care” ghettos, and pursue truth once again. Maybe then, we can actually change the world for the better.
